O cérebro reptiliano
Uma das estruturas mais interessantes originadas pelo processo de seleção natural é o cérebro humano. Ao mesmo tempo capaz de realizações que transcendem a biologia, como a criação da cultura, ele é enigmático porque possui uma dimensão primitiva, irracional, que influencia em grande medida nosso comportamento. Mas por que há esse primitivismo?

De acordo com a teoria da evolução, as estruturas que concedem vantagens evolutivas para uma espécie tendem a se reproduzir. Lentamente uma espécie vai passando por modificações, até que, após milhares de anos, pode haver o surgimento de uma nova espécie. Contudo, as espécies que descendem acabam herdando as estruturas dos antepassados, pois elas passaram pelo "teste" da seleção natural. Uma característica ou órgão desaparecem se diminuem as chances de sobrevivência; se não desaparecerem, a espécie é que pode acabar sendo extinta.



Num ambiente, várias podem ser as soluções estratégicas para a sobrevivência das espécies, e cada uma destas estratégias leva em conta a herança e as modificações provocadas pelo ambiente. Por exemplo, se num determinado ecossistema houver o aumento do número de predadores, haverá uma modificação no número de presas; quando estas escassearem, os predadores que tiverem mais facilidade para se adaptar ao novo contexto de presas escassas terão mais chances de sobrevivência, e as espécies menos flexíveis terão suas populações diminuídas.



Com o aumento da complexidade da natureza, o processo de seleção natural acaba constituindo caminhos interessantes como alternativas de sobrevivência. A cooperação parece ser uma destas vias. As espécies que cooperam utilizam formas coletivas de proteção e aviso, e isto faz com que a coletividade passe a se assumir como um tipo de "superorganismo", capaz de realizar funções que individualmente não seriam possíveis. Um exemplo deste tipo de organização são as abelhas; outro exemplo, os seres humanos.



No caso da nossa espécie, contudo, a composição é bastante interessante: ao mesmo tempo que somos capazes de cooperar, temos uma "herança" reptiliana de comportamentos predatórios. Por óbvio que este comportamento teve vantagens evolutivas, pois de outra forma não poderiam estar presentes em nossa espécie, e é essa combinação faz com que nosso comportamento tenha tantas variações. Ao mesmo tempo que somos capazes de construir comunidades, como espécie somos incapazes de deixar de lado comportamentos altamente destrutivos como o preconceito e as guerras. Se a evolução manteve um repertório de comportamentos predatórios, também favoreceu o surgimento de outras estruturas que permitiram o aparecimento do pensamento, da racionalidade e da linguagem. O mosaico está formado.

A irracionalidade de nossos comportamentos remonta às estruturas mais primitivas de funcionamento cerebral, enquanto que o pensamento e a linguagem remontam às estruturas mais recentes: isso explica por que os bebês choram antes de aprender a falar. Durante o processo de desenvolvimento do organismo, gradativamente o lado primitivo de nosso comportamento passa ao controle, ao menos parcial, dos aspectos racionais, e esse movimento permite a conquista da socialização, da mesma forma que estruturas sociais são condicionadas por elementos irracionais. Mas nunca abandonamos a forma de agir "reptiliana", e isso aparece quando o tom emocional de alguma situação exige mais do nosso aparato racional do que ele pode dar. Nesta hora, o réptil que há em nós desperta.

Gurdjieff - Meditação Movimento

A meditação em movimento é um dos pilares da obra de Gurdjieff. Ele compôs cerca de 300 músicas, muitas delas em parceria com o pianista Thomas de Hartmann, criando um repertório de sons e ritmos que propiciam a concentração. Tais músicas embalam os seus movimentos ­ um sistema de exercícios baseados em danças sagradas, traduzidas, na prática, por gestos e seqüências de passos não usuais







Encontros com Homens Notáveis (Meetings with Remarkable Men), de 1979, dirigido por Peter Brook, refaz o roteiro de Gurdjieff pelo Oriente e mostra alguns dos encontros místicos que influíram no desenvolvimento de seu trabalho oral e dos movimentos de meditação.
